Culture, culture, culture. That’s all everyone is talking about these days. If you thought the ability to achieve a great and connected culture was elusive before, it sounds down right daunting these days with everyone working from everywhere.
Let’s throw out the opinions for a moment and look at some data:
- Of 80 million employee survey responses, 59% of the global workforce is disengaged as of January 2020.
- Disengagement costs companies money – up to $550 billion a year.
- Employee concern about well-being increased 17% globally year over year.
- When employees feel they belong: Turnover decreases by 50%
- Absenteeism decreases by 75%
- Performance increases by 56%
There is no “one-size-fits-all” program for all companies to ensure their employees are engaged and happy within the organization. Every company is different because each company consists of individuals very different from one another.
How do you know what your employees want? Ask them.
One of the most common mistakes company leaders make is guessing what their employees want and feel. A culture driven by a small group of high-ranked individuals making big decisions for the majority is a recipe for culture disaster. No one knows what makes employees happy better than they do.
Climate Survey
A climate survey (also known as Climate Checks, Pulse Surveys, & Benchmarking) is used for organizational training and development. Employee Climate Surveys provide a picture of your organization’s needs. These surveys can be used to solicit employee opinions on a variety of issues such as the company’s success in communicating its mission to employees, or local issues such as quality of the working environment.
Basically, these results should paint a picture of what the company does well and where there are opportunities for improvement.
Climate Survey DOs
- DO protect responses from company retaliation
- DO promote a safe and trusting environment for employees to respond openly and freely*
- DO ask questions that are relevant and reflect the current atmosphere
- DO make the questions multiple choice and/or on a scale
- DO set deadlines for the employees to complete the survey
- DO communicate objectives of the survey
*If possible, use a 3rd party to administer the survey.
Climate Survey DON’Ts
- DON’T administer a survey if you’re not ready to take action
- DON’T administer a survey if you’re not ready to share results with the company
- DON’T create surveys that are more than 30 questions long
- DON’T administer more than 2 surveys annually
